What platform medium is best for your personality?

One of the most important parts of your author platform is having a consistent way to reach out to your fans. Like most authors you’ve probably considered a blog, but there are plenty of other ways to share your thoughts. When choosing your platform’s primary communication medium, start by considering your personality: which medium (or, for the ambitious, media) allows you to be your most authentic self? Take a look at these four popular options and see which one suits you best.

Blog posts

Blog posts are the classic medium because they’re so easy to create. They can also be good writing practice, especially if you’re still finding your voice for your book. Blogs are easy to share and can be created and consumed anywhere, making them great if you or your audience are always on the move.

Good for: anyone with the time to write; people with a captivating writing style.

If you have an outgoing personality and come across as a character on camera, a vlog may be a great idea. Because you’re a person talking to your audience instead of just words on a screen, they’ll develop a stronger connection with you, giving vlogs the potential to be more powerful than the written word. In addition, they can be quick to create if you’re comfortable speaking to a camera.

Good for: energetic personalities; people comfortable on camera; people comfortable with video editing.

A step back from vlogs, podcasts only require you to share your voice, so if you’re more comfortable being heard than seen, give these a try. Podcasts allow you to get in-depth into topics in a way that could take dozens of pages of writing with blogs, so if you’re planning on fully fleshing out your thoughts on a topic, podcasts are the way to go.

Good for: people who love to talk; people comfortable with sound editing.

Share quotes

A picture says a thousand words, and without all that editing! If you’re a visual person but don’t have the resources for a vlog, try making share quotes. These are fun, easy, and quick to create, and are perfect for audiences who don’t have a lot of time to check out your content. They’re also highly shareable, making them a great way to increase your audience.

Good for: people with a good design sense.

Give these mediums a try, and if you find one that both you and your audience love, run with it! Let us know in the comments what your favourite platform medium is and why.
